Not everyone on the grid has a team running them and it's far from essential to win or challenge for the championships. The championship has been built on the foundations of Lotus owners progressing from track days into sensible budget club level racing. Many of our driver's tow and occasionally drive their cars to a race meeting although the latter has become less popular as people take the racing more seriously.
Many however do run themselves or just enlist a friend to help them out - Alex Ball is a great example of a self-run car with multiple podiums and wins to his name, Paul Baker has been a self-run stalwart of the series for many years and the husband and wife team of Chris and Jackie Perkins look after their own cars.
Teams can offer many benefits if you want to just focus on your driver but whether you need to run yourself to keep your race budget down or you like the satisfaction of preparing your car yourself you can pretty much be assured you'll find many others in the paddock in the same position and you'll also find plenty of other drivers and teams happy to help out with parts or help in an emergency!
