Choosing a car

There are two classes in 2017 - the Lotus Cup cars and Elise Trophy.
Each class forms it's own championship, but race together in multi-class races.

Elise Trophy is a great place to start racing. It's competitive, safe and fun. It doesn't matter which type of Elise you choose, they are all on a level playing field. The Elise Cup R is the current off the shelf turnkey race car from Lotus. Lap times around Silverstone GP are c. 2m28s.

Lotus Cup is the next step up and is around 11 seconds a lap faster around Silverstone GP at c.2m17s. Any post 1996 Lotus variant can race - over the years the 340R, Europa, 2-Eleven, Motorsport Elise, S1 Exige, S2 Exige and V6 Exige Cup Rs have all won races.  It really doesn't matter which option you choose but the following guide will show you some popular options you are likely to find in the classifieds.

The newest model in the Lotus range, this car is heavier but also more powerful and comes equipped with ABS and traction control, so is a good option in the wet. It also has proper aero with bigger splitter, side boards, diffuser and rear wing. Both the S3 Cup R and standard Elise S3 variants are welcome. Average used prices £34k-£45k.

Elise S2 111R - Toyota

Elise S2 111R

Max Power (hubs) 161hp
Max power to weight 178

Elise S2 111S (K-Series)

Elise S2 111S

Min Weight 825kg

Lotus Cup Cars

There are many options to choose from and the regulations have evolved over many years to ensure that all the cars are equal. Each has its pros and cons but whichever option you choose you will be able to win, if you have the talent! In 2017 there will be ballast added for the more heavily modified cars to allow even the playing field. 20kg ballast will be added to cars with Sequential gearboxes and 10kg for those running the Bosch Motorsport ABS.

The following is a guide to the most commonly raced cars:

Exige V6 Cup R

Exige V6

Min Weight 1050kg
Max Power (hubs) 315hp
Max power to weight 297.5

Traction control and ABS (possible to upgrade to Bosch Motorsport ABS), lots or power and torque make this a popular choice and the championship winning car in 2016. Competitive and reliable out of the box with a Toyota supercharged engine. Average used prices £60k-£85k.

2-11

211

Min Weight 825kg
Max Power (hubs) 250hp
Max power to weight 297.5

The regs allow for many upgrades and modifications to your own choice. Toyota Supercharged engines give this light car a lot of torque. Many have ABS and traction control and on a tight twisty circuit the 2-11 is a hard package to beat. Average used prices £40k - £55k

Exige S2

Normally Aspirated (Typically Honda engine, although K-series/Duratec is also allowed)

Exige S2 Honda

Min Weight 825kg
Max Power (hubs) 250hp
Max power to weight 305

Honda engines are the most popular and proven choice up to 2.3litres. Strong power on cam and a light package. Can be modified with ABS, traction control and sequential gearbox. Lacks torque of the supercharged cars but has a slightly better power to weight to compensate. Average used prices £40k-55k.

Exige S1

Normally Aspirated (Typically Honda engine, although K-series/Duratec is also allowed)

Exige S1 Honda

Min Weight 825kg
Max Power (hubs) 250hp
Max power to weight 305

Again, as with the S2, the S1 Exige is typically Honda powered and allowed to run ABS, Traction control and Sequential gearbox. A very nimble chassis and won the championship in 2015. This choice is just as capable as the rest in the right hands. Average used prices £40k-£55k.
