Lotus Cup veteran John LaMaster is back for the 2018 Elise Trophy Championship with Datum Motorsport.
John has been racing in the Elise Trophy and Lotus Cup UK since 2008. During that time he has had multiple podium appearances, including winning his 100th Lotus race at Brands Hatch Grand Prix in September 2016. This will be the 11th season for John but, this year he has vowed to complete the entire season and fight at the very front for podiums and victories!
We sat down with John to see what he had to say about the year ahead.
"After a rather hap hazard 2017 due to conflicting schedules, I am really pushing to complete entire Elise Trophy Championship this year. I'm looking to pick up a few more podiums so lets hope 2018 is a successful one for me."
When did you start racing?
I started racing in 2008, so this will be my 11th season in the Elise Trophy / Lotus Cup.
What is it you enjoy about racing?
On the track I really enjoy being totally focused and pushing for the limit. In this regard I enjoy qualifying as much as racing. In the paddock, I enjoy the camaraderie among the drivers and the teamwork with my racing team.
What car / team are you racing for this season?
I’ll be racing my K-Series S2 135R again this year, supported by Datum Motorsport. This is the same car I’ve raced all along – it’s been through a lot, but it keeps going!
What are your ambitions for this season?
Last year, I wasn’t able to do the entire season due to scheduling conflicts, so this year I am hoping to do the full championship. Hopefully this year I can also pick up a few more podiums.
What advice would you give to people wanting to start racing?
Get some tuition from a professional driver – this will do as much for your performance as anything you do to your car.
Do you want to mention / thank any sponsors or partners?
I’ve been lucky to work with a couple of great teams. I started racing with Steve Williams at SWLotus, and now I’m with Tom Robinson and Ricky Horne at Datum Motorsport. I’ve also had tuition over the years from some fabulous drivers, including Jamie Stanley, Jack Goff, Calum Lockie and Adriano Medeiros. All these teams and drivers have contributed greatly to my racing.
